The Keppie Klassic returned for its 61st edition in spectacular fashion on the fairways of Aberdour Golf Club, Fife, with players treated to glorious sunshine and panoramic views across the Firth of Forth. Organised by defending champion Gary Meechan, the 2025 Klassic lived up to its reputation as one of the practice’s most anticipated annual traditions, blending light-hearted competition with a healthy dose of golfing drama.

The day began with players gathering at the clubhouse to enjoy breakfast rolls alongside tea and coffee, before heading out for a quick practice putt. Soon after, all eyes were on the first tee. The teams lined up for their annual photo shoot, with the team lineups as follows:

Making her debut, Katie Doherty was first up, a daunting prospect for even seasoned golfers. Despite some understandable nerves, she struck a confident 7-iron that unfortunately just drifted out of bounds, but won applause for stepping up to the mark. Another Klassic newcomer, Laura Porter, seized the moment, launching a powerful drive that finished with the ball nestling at the back of the green — the standout opening shot of the day.

Not to be outdone, Bruce provided early comic relief as his ball ricocheted off the cart path and trundled downhill the hill to relative safety — proof that in golf, sometimes fortune favours the bold (or the lucky).

Highlights on the Fairways

Play settled into a relaxed rhythm, with the pace of golf best described as “unhurried.” Yet the competition quickly began to take shape:

  • Archie Prince, carrying the scars of last year’s last-place finish, stunned his playing partners and local spectators with a superb front nine, making a mockery of his 30 handicap.
  • Gordon Watson, true to form, turned heads for reasons beyond his swing — arriving with a golf cart and bag so well-worn they’ve been around longer than some Keppie staff members.
  • Chris Mitchell defied the after-effects of a lively night in the pub to string together a tidy round, despite the 3-putts and the strop on the 11th
  • Meanwhile, organiser Gary Meechan faced good-natured scrutiny after it emerged, he had quietly played a practice round at Aberdour weeks earlier, a move many suggested offered a “marginally unsporting” advantage.

The Final Stretch and Clubhouse Anticipation

As the sun dipped lower and groups made their way up the 18th, the day’s relaxed atmosphere gave way to a touch of competitive tension, heightened by Robin’s arrow like 6-iron from the 18th tee to leave a mere 185cm for a birdie 2 to close the round out. Golfers regrouped in the clubhouse for refreshments as Gary and fellow Keppie Klassic committee member Robin meticulously reviewed scorecards under the Stableford scoring system.

Prize Winners

After much anticipation, the results were announced:

  • Team Prize – Team 03 (Fraser Davie, Archie & Keith)
  • Nearest to the Pin (Hole 6) – Fraser Low
  • Nearest to the Pin (Hole 10) – Fraser Low
  • Nearest to the Pin (Hole 18) – Robin
  • Last Place – Bruce
  • Third Place – Robin
  • Second Place – Archie
  • First Place – Keith

The awards were followed by hearty post-match meals, laughter, and the familiar mix of good-natured ribbing and congratulations that has long defined the Klassic.

Another Chapter in a Storied Tradition

The 61st Keppie Klassic will be remembered not just for its winners, but for its sunshine, scenery, and the stories forged both on and off the fairways. New participants Katie Doherty and Laura Porter brought fresh energy to the event, while returning players reminded everyone why this tournament is such a highlight of the Keppie calendar.

A special thanks goes to organiser Gary Meechan for coordinating another successful year, and to all who took part in making this edition one of the most enjoyable yet.

Here’s to the 62nd Keppie Klassic — and whatever golfing drama it might bring!
