Designing Single-Family Housing Communities for Long-Term Success

Keppie was delighted to host the ARL Scotland Hub Summer Seminar & Social at our Glasgow studio, bringing together professionals from across the residential living sector to explore the opportunities and challenges shaping Scotland’s rapidly evolving market for single-family housing communities.

The evening began with an insightful presentation from Ed Howe of Bidwells, who provided an overview of current market conditions and the key trends driving growth within the sector. This was followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from across the development process, including Keppie Associate Heather Macsween, who shared an architectural perspective on the delivery of successful single-family housing developments.

Discussions explored the journey from investment and funding through to welcoming residents into their new homes, with panellists highlighting the importance of collaboration across the sector to unlock opportunities for growth. A recurring theme throughout the evening was the recognition that successful developments are about more than delivering homes. Creating vibrant, connected communities was identified as a critical factor in ensuring the long-term success of these schemes.

Drawing on Keppie’s experience, Heather highlighted the importance of carefully phasing developments to ensure that infrastructure, amenities and shared spaces are delivered alongside new homes, helping communities to take shape from the earliest stages.

Reflecting on the discussion, Heather said:

“Architecture has an important role to play in shaping communities, not just buildings. As more residents look to single-family housing as a long-term home, the focus must be on creating neighbourhoods that support connection, wellbeing and everyday life through thoughtful design and placemaking.”
