Boost for Coatbridge town centre

Planning approval for Keppie Design's proposed new healthcare and council building in Coatbridge, to the east of Glasgow, was granted on 5 February 2008.

A joint development by North Lanarkshire Council and Lanarkshire Acute NHS Trust, the building in the pedestrianised centre of Coatbridge will include both healthcare facilities and council services.  Dawn Construction are finalising the £13m design and build contract, with work expected to start on site in Spring 2008.

North Lanarkshire Council's section of the building contains a Registrar, a public library and a First Stop Shop. The NHS will have space to provide community and general dental services, a community mental health facility, a Dental Centre for the education of dental students and therapists and two GP practices.

The new building will help the NHS in its aim to deliver a modern, integrated health system based on stronger and more visible primary care services. The building also enables the NHS to provide more health services locally, with improved public transport access.

Architecturally, the overall brief is to create a civic building with a strong identity that will both enhance the town centre and improve the overall wellbeing of the community. The activity generated by the new building will, it is hoped, become a catalyst for the further regeneration of the local area.
