Killermont Gents Locker Room

Brief

Glasgow Golf Club, the ninth oldest golf club in the world, has its principal clubhouse at Killermont House, Bearsden, Glasgow.  Originally constructed in the sixteenth century, the cream sandstone mansion house had been the home of the club since 1904.  Glasgow Golf Club has an extensive heritage and Keppie Interior Design's solutions had to respect this and the property's considerable period character.

The club's project team provided an open brief that offered Keppie Interior Design scope to pursue a bold approach.

Response

With fantastic views over the first and eighteenth holes, the new facility successfully achieves both outward and inward looking character.  Concepts focused extensively on the quality and volume of the first floor space, the ever changing influence of natural light, the views over the golf course and a modern palette of quality materials. The arrangement was thoroughly considered to ensure that users could take full advantage of the window areas, whilst the rear of the locker room now cleverly integrates the greater percentage of lockers.  This allows the main volume to remain light and airy.  Walnut, ash and limestone are the principal materials used to create a rich feel.  Oversized pendant lighting and the furnishings of the lounge area are introductions of vibrant colour, building warmth against the neutral backdrop.  Throughout our design work we have set high aspirations for material quality in order to deliver appropriate durability in use.

Outcome

The project was completed over an extremely tight nine-week programme and within budget.  The locker room has been transformed from a dark introverted space to a bright, functional space that is a pleasure to experience. The careful selection of soft furnishings and warm colour palette, create a comfortable environment usually absent from these facilities.  The members have embraced the bright new space and it is pleasing that members appear in no hurry to leave the space for the bar.
