Our Client's requirement was primarily the design of a new denominational secondary school that was to replace two existing schools, one of which occupied part of the new site in Saltcoats. Our challenge was to integrate these two schools in a new building that offered all the benefits of new technologies and changing teaching methods, as well as the requirement to offer increased community involvement and to provide a focus for the surrounding area.
The site is a very dramatic one. It features one of the largest 'green' spaces in Ayrshire with views available towards the island of Arran. This space has been subsumed into the common good and although we had the majority of this land to work with, recognition of the public attachment to, and regular use of, the open space was of vital consideration.
The design is based on an urban 'street grid' with the main three storey high galleried route providing the principal circulation throughout the school. Civic focus is created on the main approaches through the provision of a circular top-lit drum and the logic of the internal planning, where related functions are co-located, has been reflected in the external form. New all weather facilities and upgraded grass pitches sit within a suitably landscaped site which provides students with social areas for play and recreation throughout the school day and beyond.
We were fortunate to be able to work closely with our Client and to have the opportunity to collaborate with the new Head Teacher. The final design reflected closely the desires of those who would finally occupy the school. This close working relationship has ensured that the planning allows the building to function as an educational building when required and to provide a wide range of community facilities both during and beyond the teaching day, without compromise to pupils' learning.
