To create the necessary spatial variety and adaptability, we borrowed strategies developed for commercial environments. These included a deep rectangular modular floor plate, fan assisted mixed mode ventilation (which guaranteed fresh air, so essential for concentration when learning) and flexible underfloor servicing. The space was fully IT enabled. The environment also needed to be well supervised, humane and have close links to outdoor learning space and refreshments.
The solution had an elegant simplicity. At the centre we positioned a staff base which was designed to appear as a welcoming "help-desk" rather than a traditional staff room. From here the zone could be supervised both inside and outside. Importantly the areas which could be prone to bullying, the toilets and stairs, have good visual links to the base. The remainder of the space is totally flexible and can be reconfigured in a variety of ways. Extensive glazing is used throughout to promote a sense of openness and to light the rooms naturally. There are no corridors.
Our proposals were promoted through the use of freehand sketches. The 'learning zone' was shown in various different ways, all indicating the level of adaptability which was absolutely critical to the design ethos. Although our bid was unsuccessful, the design proposals section scored very highly and was commended for its level of innovative thinking by the Client’s advisors.
