Tameside Hospital

Brief

This project is part of the Northern Batch Hospitals programme, procured by two separate NHS Trusts under a framework agreement, led by Consort Healthcare and delivered through a Public Private Partnership with the Trusts.  The Tameside project goal was to provide a rationalised and re-ordered site that would unify the currently fragmented collection of buildings to provide a more streamlined, sustainable and manageable site, permitting fully integrated patient care.  The construction involved several new facilities identified within the redevelopment masterplan for Tameside Hospital along with a new site access route and car parking.

Response

The new facilities, replacing twenty five percent of the existing accommodation, include an extension to the existing acute hospital, a new mental illness facility for the elderly and a new energy centre incorporating biomass technology.  The extension incorporates two distinct atria wings of accommodation.  One extended the adjacent theatres, radiology and adult outpatients departments and the other relocated the children’s outpatients and wards from outdated buildings elsewhere on site.  It will also provide a new centrally located main car park.  The extension provides adult ward accommodation, a new automated pharmacy and a new entrance hub with café, retail and self check-in services.  Extensive consultation with staff and the public ensures that the design of the facilities reflect their vision.

Outcome

The new building is connected to the existing hospital street and linked to the nearby Ladysmith building by a new bridge.  Tameside Hospital is now fully interconnected for the first time in its history, enhancing surgical and in-patient facilities and creating integrated radiology, outpatient and children’s departments.  Patient accommodation benefits from natural daylight and views to the countryside beyond, whilst the extensive external redevelopment and landscaping encourages movement of patients, visitors and FM services clearly within the hospital site.
